Wellness with Waldy is a segment on my weekly radio show, Wednesdays 11 am-1 pm. The content on this blog does not reflect the views or opinions of Rowan University or Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM. This or That? will be a comparison between two similar meals.
Let’s say you are at an Italian restaurant, and you are some form of pasta. You’re looking between the spaghetti and meatballs and the baked ziti. They both look so good, but which is better for you?
A serving size of spaghetti and meatballs has 920 calories and 36 grams of fat, whereas the baked ziti has 1170 calories and 55 grams of fat.
Meatballs are full of protein and tomato sauce has lycopene, an antioxidant that helps keep your skin healthy. The spaghetti is made of simple calories, however, if you only eat about half of the pasta, you won’t be taking in as many calories.
On the other hand, baked ziti is loaded with cheese and not enough tomato sauce to balance it out. The cheese equals about 3/4 of the amount of calories and twice the amount of saturated fat you should consume in a day.
In the end, spaghetti and meatballs is the healthier choice. It has more protein and antioxidants and fewer calories than the baked ziti.
